DISPATCH and EMERGENCY OPERATIONS
When the time comes to purchase dispatch consoles, remember the BIG TEN.
1. Since the center never sleeps, your consoles must withstand the rigors of a 24/7 environment.
2. Address human factors in your design and conform to ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act).
3. A fully adjustable sit - stand console may increase productivity and reduce fatigue.
4. Verify the space needed for CPU’s, UPS, transformers, backup radios and other equipment required to support the operation.
5. Don’t forget to deal with the heat of all this equipment.
6. Vertical and horizontal cable management will be a major challenge.
7. Allow your dispatchers to determine the best position for their monitors. Be sure there is enough space for them on the console.
8. Make sure the console is rated to handle every aspect of the “total load”.
9. Last but not least, develop a layout that maximizes the space you have. Will there be a future expansion? If so, what impact will it have on the noise level? What about critical lines of sight?
10. Like everything else, you’ll get what you pay for.
